The 2016 edition of the West African University Games (WAUG), initially scheduled to hold between November 22 to December 4, 2016 at the university of Port Harcourt, has been set to come up within October 31 and November 11, 2018.

Arrival of participants starts on the 31st of October, the opening Ceremony on the 3rd of November and everything comes to an end with the closing ceremony on the 11th of November.

This was decided upon last week in a meeting of West African Universities directors of sports at the University of Porthacourt. Anthony Ibe, the deputy Vice-chancellor and the Chairman of Local Organising Committee(LOC) for WAUG, gave the 2018 World cup and commonwealth games as the excuses for the change in the dates.

Also, a review of the requirements for the registration was done. Unlike previous editions, diploma students or students in affiliated centres of universities won't be eligible for the competition. The Chairman stated that this edition will only be for undergraduate and postgraduate students only. This decision was aimed at curbing the influx of mercenaries.

The registration for the international game will be done online with a token paid by the participating universities.

Ndowa Lale, the Vice-chancellor of the host university, University of Porthacourt, also restated that the school is prepared to host the event in terms of facilities and logistics.

"The new date of the event has been engraved in a marble." the LOC Chairman buttressed.

Speaking with one of the Universities' sports officer present, Abu Adamu from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, revealed to OAU KILONSHELE that only schools in Nigeria that did well in the last conducted Nigerian University Games (NUGA) are eligible to represent the country in the international event.

"The schools on the medal table, that is, those who won bronze, silver and gold in each sporting events will be eligible for the registration." Abu explained.

  2. There are a lot of female footballers, but WAUG didn't include female football, why?
Please, if this is really created to be fun, then there should be no gender inequality. In UNN, during the 2016 waug games, the female football won the gold, and the guys won bronze,
i don't see any reason why female football shouldn't be included this time. Please
