The management of Obafemi Awolowo University have decided to look into the the on-going scores between the academic staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the three Non Academic Staff Unions: The  Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union, NASU,  and National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, over the parameter and percentage for sharing the 23 Billion naira released by FG as the owed Earned Allowance EA between 2009 and 2012.

In a meeting held earlier today, it was revealed that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, in a letter to the Director of Finance of the Nigerian  University Commission (NUC), stated that the money meant for the three sister unions between the 3 years is to the tune of 6.13 billion naira.

The letter was a response to the earlier request of the NUC demanding for the submission of the data for payment purpose.

However, it was noted that ASUU members were paid over 800 million naira during the tenure of the former Acting VC, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, which they were not entitled to. As regards this, there was no objection as one of the ASUU members at the meeting attested to it and statistics to back it up was presented.

"Even If ASUU wants to have the whole 89 percent that was sent, which we will not accept, they must refund over 800 million naira paid during Elujoba's tenure to the Non-academic staff unions' account as they knew that they were not entitled to the money. At least, If we add that to the 11 percent of about 168 million naira, it is something." Wale Odewumi, and branch chairman of OAU NASU, explained.

The aggrieved Union members also blocked the roads today, sent students away from lecture theatres with cane and have resolved to continue the demonstration as they await the response of the Management, as agreed upon at the meeting today.

"By tomorrow 11am, we will get back to the staff unions after a meeting of the University management." the VC, promised.

The unions have therefore refused any payment as against the suggestion of the VC. OAU KILONSHELE gathered that the University boss proffered that the money should be disbursed and shared between all unions concerned as one of the directives from NUC.

In an address, the branch chairman of OAU SSANU, Mr. Ademola Oketunde, urged members to maintain decorum and the Spirit of solidarity even amidst the struggle.

"We've been alleged by the University management that we beat some people and destroyed some things, which we denied for lack of evidence from their part. Let us maintain peace and let us act according to the directives from our Union leaders." he stated.

The branch Secretary of NASU OAU, Mr. Olajide, who spoke with our correspondent, clarified, saying that; none of the union members will be paid a dime until the matter is resolved.

"Since we've told the VC that none of the sister unions is willing to accept the payment, nobody will be paid because we have to reach a compromise and append our signatures in agreement. The VC will not want to indict himself by paying ASUU."

He added that because of the exploitation by the commercial motorcycle riders, who were allowed access to the university, cyclists will also be part of the restricted movement by tomorrow pending the end of the issue .
