Yet another Academic Staff Union to go on a nationwide warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics are to commence a nationwide one-week warning strike on Monday.

The President of ASUP, Mr. Usman Dutse, said during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that academic and administrative exercise would be suspended in all public polytechnics across the country between noon of January 30, 2017 and February 6, 2017.

He said that the National Executive Committee of ASUUP had given a directive to all public polytechnics to comply with the warning strike directive.

According to him, the union decided to embark on a warning strike over the refusal of the government to implement the NEEDS Assessment report of July 2014 which showed that the polytechnics and colleges of education required N652.6 million to address the decay in infrastructure in the institutions.

The ASUP President also listed the non removal of the entry dichotomy between HND and degrees, poor funding of the polytechnics, victimization of union officials, and non release of check off dues among other reasons for the planned industrial action.

He said, “The union therefore resolved at the emergency meeting of the National Executive Council held on the 25 January 2017 to embark on a one week warning strike effective 12 noon, January 30, 2017 to 6 February 2017 in the first instance.

“Members are therefore directed to ensure total compliance as no academic and administrative activity is expected in any public polytechnic across Nigeria within the period; and await further directives from the union’s organs.”

Dutse said that the union had issued a one month ultimatum to the Federal Government to draw its attention to the issues affecting the sector on November 14, 2016 without a response.
