NUASA PRESIDENT'S IMPEACHMENT: UNITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OVERWHELMS JUSTICE

*NUASA PRESIDENT'S IMPEACHMENT: UNITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OVERWHELMS JUSTICE.*
21st of January, 2017

For a week now, the impeachment of Mr Akpan John Sunday as NUASA OAU's President has been a trending issue. The impeachment was said to have taken place in the parliamentary session held on the 13th of January, 2017. In an attempt to clarify issues as regards the #5,000 fraud allegation and the impeachment, whose process was termed to be unconstitutional, a press conference was summoned on Friday, 20th of January and it had members of press, the executive and legislative representatives of the departmental association in attendance.

The briefing took off at exactly 6:40pm as Mr Lawal Quadri Adebayor, the staff adviser to the association, presided the meeting. After the acknowledgements of the news outfits present, He said it emphatically that, *"the alleged president didn't defraud the association of any #5,000, the account of the association is always with me"* .
Also, Mr Adebayor made it known that the alumni members of the department, himself inclusive, had had several meetings on the impeachment saga. He said, *"the first president of this association called me yesternight on this same topic of discussion"* .

Thereafter, a letter from the Accounting Students' Representative Council (ASRC) was read to the hearing of the audience present. Though the content of the letter wasn't made clear as it wasn't addressing the impeachment case on ground, but with the emphasis on *unity and sustainability of the association*. After the quick- reading, the members of both the legislative and executive arms of the association were called out to sign the letter.

The signing process witnessed a sense of disparity as some members were penning down their signature with apathy and under compulsion. Hon. Abiaka Emmanuel ran to the signing table hastily in order to avoid the shots from the camera. Hon. Adeyemi Moses, Hon. Falae Temitope and Ajayi Emmanuel (the speaker and his deputy) tried to avoid the process as that could be inferred from their incessant moving out of the meeting hall and the reluctance in signing the letter.

However, press men were given the opportunity to ask questions. Mr. Ojelabi of Oau peeps news agency asked if the previous allegation and impeachment were mere fabrication. The deputy speaker could not answer the polar question, instead, he was beating about the bush finishing with the phrase *for the unity and sustainability of the association*.

Also, alongside some questions, Mr. Alfred of this agency asked the house, why the meeting was tagged a 'press conference' if only what they would do is signing, without shedding light on the fraud allegation and impeachment story. Diplomacy became the order of the day as parliamentarians were not able to say whether the formerly stated fraud allegation was true or false.

Before the curtain was drawn, Mr.Akpan defended himself saying that *the remaining #5,000 from the zoo visit was added to the money for the construction of the white marker board in ICAN lecture theatre*.

At the end, the staff adviser gave a brief closing remarks and the meeting ended around 8:00pm.

The above statement of the staff adviser and the president negated the report of the investigation committee on the alleged fraud saga, in which the president was found guilty of falsification of account figures. The recommendations of the accounting Students' Representative Council(ASRC) on the letter included; the maintaining of the position of the Budget and Finance Committee, the writing of an apology letter to the house and pasting it in public places and the refunding of the money back to the BFC chairman or secretary.

Should we now evade justice and proper disciplinary actions? Thereby, sweeping illegal acts under the carpet, all in the name of fostering unity and sustaining the continuity of the departmental association?.

Olufemi Alfred.
