Mixed reactions surround 2.5CGPA minimum requirement for OAU SU Election as campaign ban is lifted

"Let it be known that it is the people that are here in this Congress that made this decision. Five people submitted in favor of 2.5CGPA, therefore, 2.5CGPA stands" Electoral Commission Chairman, Showbaba concludes at the congress before running off.

Obafemi Awolowo University witnessed yet another dramatic display from the Electoral Commission body yesterday in the congress when the Chairman ran out of gathering of Great Ife students after making his final statement of the stand of 2.5CGPA as a criterion for SU elections.

The Congress which started some minutes past 5pm was for the Electoral Commission to reveal the modalities that follow the SU elections.

Some members of congress were already making their reservations known to the Congress concerning the fixed dates for each electoral exercise when the Chairman of the Electoral Commission announced the 2.5CGPA minimum requirement to being registered as a political candidate for any SU position. This announcement was welcomed by aggressive disapproval from some students while some came out to support the modality.

Without any constitutional backing, 2.5CGPA minimum was a plot to disqualify some political candidates years ago by the school management some said why some came out to defend the relevance of the conventional 2.5CGPA minimum.

As a reminder, during the TY led SU administration, this same 2.5CGP minimum requirement was debased by the Congress of students of any form of relevance to the political excellence during the fracas between Honourable Seun and Ibiyemi.

After the views of some seven students were allowed audience by the Electoral Commission on the aforementioned requirement, the Chairman announced and decreed that " Let it be known that it is the people that are here in this Congress that made this decision. Five people submitted in favor of 2.5CGPA, therefore, 2.5CGPA stands". As obvious to the blind, immediately the Chairman made this statement, he announced the lift of campaign ban and ran out of the Congress allegedly trying to avoid the growing mob.

As at the time of this reportage, some members of the leftist group have decried the act of the Electoral Commission and the equivalent of 2.5CGPA minimum requirement to political integrity and success.

However, amidst the whole fracas, the campaign ban has been lifted even with reservations from different parties and Oau community is sure to start hearing from each political candidate declaring their respective prospective SU positions publicly to canvass supporters for votes in the forthcoming election even though some believe the ban has not been lifted.

The drama has not ended, but just started as surely there will be movements against the final resolution made by the Electoral Commission concerning the 2.5CGPA minimum requirement.
